Nutrition Frequently Asked Questions
Q:What impact does nutrition have on AMD?
A: AREDS proved that nutritional supplementation can impact AMD. While AREDS was effective
in 25% of AMD patients, new discoveries have emerged about the importance of the only two carotenoids found in
the macula: Zeaxanthin and lutein.
Some observational studies have shown that generous intakes of Zeaxanthin and lutein, particularly from certain
carotenoid-rich foods like spinach, broccoli and eggs, are associated with a significant reduction in the risk for
cataract and for age-related macular degeneration. Learn more about nutrition and macular health.
Q: Why do I need to take supplements for AMD?
A: It is now well established in scientific research that a diet rich in zeaxanthin and
lutein contributes to the health of the macula.
However, even if we were to eat the five servings of fruits and vegetables per day that nutritionists recommend,
it would still not adequately replenish our macula's zeaxanthin supplies.
While Lutein is abundant in the food you eat, Zeaxanthin is not. To eat the equivalent of enough zeaxanthin per day,
as what is contained in EyePromise Restore, you would have to eat approximately 40 ears of corn, or 20 orange peppers,
or 16.5 quarts of spinach each day to simply acquire enough zeaxanthin.
EyePromise Restore provides the highest available dose of Zeaxanthin per day. Taking EyePromise Restore as part
of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can have a positive impact on your macular health.
Q: What is AREDS?
A: The National Eye Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health,
conducted clinical trials based on the Age-related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). AREDS demonstrated
that nutritional supplements can slow the progression of AMD. In fact, the AREDS formula were proved
effective in 25% of patients at risk. The new AREDS II formula, containing zeaxanthin and lutein,
may prove to be even more effective.
The implications are striking when put in concrete terms, as one recent report did (Bressler, 2002):
"If the 1.2 million U.S. citizens who will likely develop advanced age-related macular degeneration over the next
five years took these supplements, more than 300,000 would be spared."
