THE MYTH ABOUT MESO

We obtain the retinal carotenoids (zeaxanthin and lutein) via diet. The body cannot manufacture retinal carotenoids on its own.

Meso-zeaxanthin:

Is not found in the food supply

Is not found in blood

Is not found in any other tissue in the body, except the macula.

Is believed to be derived from lutein

The hypothesis as to its formation: The eye considers dietary zeaxanthin important, because the placement of zeaxanthin is in the very center of the macula, where the highest concentration of visual cells are located. Because dietary zeaxanthin is scarce and lutein is relatively abundant in the diet , through evolution, the eye has managed to convert some of the lutein into an intermediate molecule called meso-zeaxanthin to assist in the shortfall of dietary zeaxanthin in the diet. Again, meso-zeaxanthin is found nowhere else in the body.

No human safety data with meso-zeaxanthin are known to have been submitted to the FDA.

Some companies are marketing meso-zeaxanthin supplements. Its long term effect on other tissues in the body is unknown.

Consider:
  • Meso-zeaxanthin is found nowhere else in the body, except the macula.
  • Meso-zeaxanthin is not found in the food supply.
  • Meso-zeaxanthin has no human safety studies.
  • Meso-zeaxanthin results from the conversion of lutein in the macula.

Question:

If your diet includes lutein (from food or supplements) and meso-zeaxanthin results from the conversion of lutein, why would you need to take meso-zeaxanthin separately?
