Frequently Asked Questions for EyeCare Professionals

Q: What are the differences between EyePromise® Restore and EyePromise® Ten?
A: EyePromise Ten is a 10mg dietary Zeaxanthin supplement designed to augment your eye health nutraceutical regimen. EyePromise Restore contains ingredients similar to the AREDS II formula. Both formulations support macular health.

Q: What is the science behind EyePromise Restore?
A: The AREDS II (Aged-Related Eye Disease Study) clinical trials currently underway by the National Eye Institute intend to demonstrate that nutritional supplements can slow the progression of AMD. The original AREDS formula slowed the progression of disease in 25% of patients with AMD, however the critical nutrients for central vision, zeaxanthin and lutein, were not commercially available at the time the original study took place and they are contained in the AREDS II formulation.

New findings since the AREDS study findings were released raise concerns about two ingredients in the AREDS formulation: zinc at high levels and beta-carotene. Subsequently, Bausch & Lomb™, Alcon™ and other nutraceutical companies introduced AREDS-based formulas containing lutein. No other supplement in the market contains the amount of zeaxanthin available in EyePromise supplements.

Zeaxanthin is preferentially deposited at a 2:1 ratio vs. lutein in the center of the macula. However, Zeaxanthin is far less prevalent in the average diet than lutein and typically needs to be supplemented. Zeaxanthin is rare in our diets, but is preferentially taken up in the macula.

EyePromise Restore closely mirrors the AREDS II formula however it contains a much higher dosage of Zeaxanthin for maximum benefit. EyePromise Restore also eliminates beta-carotene and reduces zinc to a safer level.

Q: Which nutritional supplements should I take if I have AMD?
A: EyePromise Restore is recommended to provide the maximum available dose of dietary Zeaxanthin, and the benefit of an AREDS II-based formula to support macular health.

Q: Is EyePromise safe?
A: Dietary Zeaxanthin was safety tested in one of the most extensive NDIs ever presented to the FDA on Zeaxanthin in 2000. Subsequently, the World Health Organization established an acceptable daily intake (upper tolerable limits) of up to 2 milligrams of Zeaxanthin per kilogram of body weight (equivalent to 163mg for a 180-pound man). These results were reported in its Summary and Conclusions, 63rd Meeting, Geneva , June 2004.

Q: Why hasn’t my eye doctor told me about EyePromise?
A: EyePromise Restore and EyePromise Ten mg are still considered new products - Restore was launched in April 2005, and EyePromise 10mg in late 2007. Word is spreading, and awareness has increased significantly since the launch of EyePromise Restore!
