You CAN Do Something About Your AMD Risk
A letter from ZeaVision's Chairman & CEO for AMD Awareness Month
ZeaVision is pleased to bring you new AMD information this month. Risk factors for AMD continue to be defined and generally classified as modifiable and non-modifiable. Recently, clinical papers from the U.S. and the Netherlands are providing GOOD NEWS on risks previously classified as non-modifiable.
One of the strongest risk factors is “family history” (genetics). Scientists have identified 6 to 8 genes (depending on definitions) that affect risks. The painless procedure to determine genetic risk is called genotyping, and this analysis can tell a patient if they inherited the good genes (protective) or the bad genes (higher risk). So far, these genes seem to relate to the brakes / gas pedal on our inherent immune/inflammatory response, our ability to modify dietary fats, cellular energy factors, and our ability to properly utilize protective substances like Vitamin E and zeaxanthin/lutein.
If you are born with one of these high risk genes and you smoke, you may have a 20 to 30 fold increased risk of advanced AMD. Now, some GREAT NEWS! If you were born with a high risk gene, (family history), you can significantly reduce your AMD risk thru behavioral modification. For instance, medical specialists are beginning to be able to predict who will benefit most from nutritional supplementation. If you have an AMD family history, it’s worthwhile to modify your behavior! So, in the 21st Century, you CAN do something about AMD family history risk.
A European study (EurEye Study) at 7 clinical centers recently demonstrated that individuals exposed to excessive sunlight over a lifetime (particularly harmful blue light) and with a poor diet (thus, low blood levels of vitamin C, E and zeaxanthin), had a four-fold increased risk of advanced AMD.
Other major risk factors for AMD beyond family history and smoking include excessive sunlight exposure, female gender, light skin and eyes, obesity, poor diet and exercise habits, increased cardiovascular disease risks, and low levels of the protective macular pigments (lutein & zeaxanthin) in the eye.
